Michael McKenna - Works

Darley Primary School is a small school on the outskirts of Bacchus Marsh, a growth satellite to Melbourne. The school had a rapidly expanding population and a parent / teacher community.

Darley Primary School was established in 1979 as a \'core plus\' concept school with a permanent administration building and ubiquitous relocatables linked by covered ways. The site has a 7 metre rise with significant areas of levelling to establish the school in an often dry and windy environment.

The masterplan develops a village environment, adding classroom wings and a sports hall. A village environment is developed with diverse range of design motifs, colour, texture and pattern. This reinforces a school culture of community art that inhabit surfaces. Each architectural element is designed with a minimum volume expression (budget constraints), with surfaces developed for expressive potential. Key visual elements include a polychrome brickwork and stripe motifs.

Stage: 2 stages of construction complete.
