Michael McKenna - Works

This is a 222-seat lecture theatre at Victoria University Werribee campus. The Theatre provides an excellent teaching venue with tiered seating, ideal sight lines / acoustics and computerized AV facilities. It is planned as a first stage of a conference complex.

The architecture emphasises the theatre’s prominence at the entry to the small campus. The theatre has a flying wing form that is proportioned by crease and fold to evolve interior acoustics. The exterior is banded zinc panels for a durable and tactile exterior surface. The flying wing recalls Melnikov’s Rusakov Factory Worker’s Club, Moscow (c1927) and is a modernist typology for a lecture theatre.

A lean-too foyer addresses a small forecourt with a folded canopy and is an air-lock for the air conditioned auditorium. It has orange alucobond panels, as a colourful ‘pop’ motif in contrast to the somber red and gray of other campus buildings.

Stage: Construction complete.
