Michael McKenna - Works

This project develops flexible learning facilities for a suburban primary school for the Commonwealth Government BER Program. This 1960s school campus was established at the end of the post war suburban boom with ubiquitous low profile concrete block structures and a football oval.

The new facilities replace demolished buildings and provides seven new flexible learning spaces supported by open plan break out and other facilities.

The planning establishes an undulating form activating a variety of spatial orientations and oblique exterior and interior vistas. The building volumes is similarly undulating with rising floor and roof elements, with high glazing. The undulating forms are expressed with highlight windows, canopies and coloured cladding to develop an urban scape aesthetic.

A range of passive thermal design principles develop a low energy solution. Building systems optimize internal thermal mass (reverse block veneer walls), have high R-value insulation, sun shading and natural ventilation. Active environmental systems have been selected for low energy consumption including hydronic heating and evaporative cooling.

Stage: Construction complete.
