Michael McKenna - Works

This facility supports families in crisis across Melbourne’s south east suburbs with a dedicated comprehensive residential and support service facility for women. The design establishes a secure village environment with contoured landscaping to common areas between semi detached villas and the support service facility.

The residential village is formed by semi detached villas with a low modern profile. Human scale is achieved by articulation of verandahs and a patchwork of materials, stained timber, glazed brick and metal. The service facility design presents a low profile modern building to the street with an expressed canopy and screen west facing facades in natural finished timber (for sun control).

A range of thermal design principles are included to minimize energy consumption across the complex. Building systems optimize internal thermal mass (reverse block veneer walls), have high R-value insulation, sun shading, natural light and natural ventilation.

The landscape solutions are a key to the design, which include communal and private gardens and a street garden. The suburban character of the site is maintained by retaining eucalyptus trees and augmenting with landscaping, driveways and brick fencing.

Stage: Construction complete.
