PYRMONT REDEVELOPMENT (HERITAGE)
ST KILDA

This project for Port Phillip Housing Association is the redevelopment of Pyrmont Mansion to for new rooming houses with 35 self contained studio units. The design creates two separate Houses, each with separate address and facilities.

The front garden to Barkly street is restructured to form a new palm grove garden, reusing mature palm trees salvaged from the site. The heritage villa is partially restored, and extended with 3 storey additions to the rear. A separate new 3 storey house is formed to the rear of the site with a communal garden between.

ESD principles are integrated into the design with optimum orientation to north, high value insulation to walls and roof, sun shading and optimised natural ventilation. Active ESD technology includes solar hot water, energy efficient hydronic heating, AAA rated water appliances and stormwater harvest.

The design aesthetic is contemporary, yet compliments the heritage villa with pitched roofs and high proportioned fašades. A human scale is achieved in facades through a Tri colour patchwork motif wrapping across the walls and roofs. The polychrome effect achieves an urban form that is in keeping with St Kildas bri-collage character.
