Michael McKenna - Works

This project is a stage of the conversion of the former West Brunswick Primary School into housing. The client engaged a range of architects working independently to achieve the redevelopment. This work was to convert four 19th C classrooms into four two bedroom apartments.

The design retains memory of the 19th C classrooms, with open plan living spaces on the ground floor, with expansive windows and abundant natural light. New spaces are achieved reclaiming upper volumes and the large roof spaces with mezzanines for sleeping and bathroom functions.

Planning of mezzanines allows double height volumes for the living spaces. A modern ambience is achieved with off white plaster and timber detailing punctuated by a floating steel framed staircases .

Environmental sustainability was a key requirement of the client and the complex has passive and active systems including water efficiency, grey water recycle, building fabric enhancement, bulk insulation, natural lighting, natural ventilation, double-glazing, efficient lighting and appliances, solar hot water systems, on site sewer treatment, and materials recycling.

Stage: Construction complete.
