CASTLEMAINE PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE AND LIBRARY LIMITED COMPETITION (HERITAGE)
CASTLEMAINE

This design for a limited competition was to redevelop the Castlemaine Performing Arts Centre and Library. The site is adjacent to the Town Hall and the brief was to unite disparate heritage buildings to form a Complex for Performing Arts and Library.

The design solution synthesises the complex with an elongated foyer to access the separate functions together with a new civic entry space from mechanics lane. The foyer provides flexibility for functions, activities and operating hours.

An open plan Library is formed in the Mechanics Society rooms and opens into a central courtyard and reading area, also providing important natural light and ventilation.

The Performing Arts Theatre remains in tact with enhancement of stage areas for access and auditorium overflow for audience in the round.

The foyer architecture of a curving and wrapping enclosure reflects old world machinery and engineering themes of the Mechanics Society. The freestyle design element contrasts the heritage design. Street canopies provide important urban design features, weather protection and integrated graphics for identity.

Stage: Competition Entry.

Timeline: 2001.
